Nick Woolsey began his involvement with movement arts in high school, where he practiced springboard diving and began dance classes. After high school he studied Chen style Taijiquan intensively with master Yau-Sun Tong in Halifax, NS. A knee injury somehow led to a long period of wayward traveling, during which he maintained an on-again, off-again relationship with movement practices. When he found poi, it was what he'd been looking for all along. He applied techniques and principles from other art forms (particularly Tai Chi ) to poi, and has generally been devoting himself to what he hopes can be a significant movement art, all of which fits into a threefold vision. He is fortunate to have a loving support community.
Marc Jiran: CTG (Chief Technical Guru)
Marc Jirian is the type of person who will take apart a toaster just to see how it works, and then put it back together in a way that makes it work a little better. He is a self-taught techie handiman, media artist, and all around great guy. He shares Nick Woolsey's tendency to put his dreams into action, which isn't always good for his bank account. Fortunately he also shares Nick's tendency to have a lot of great friends. With a little luck, Playpoi will be able to one day hire Marc on an ongoing, part-time basis, or something.
Alex Grunenfelder, CDA (Chief Design Architech)
Alex Grunenfelder has been involoved in the design sciences since he was a small child, where he engineered elaborate schemes to bend and twist the minds of his fellow schoolmates. He has since decided to use his powers for good, not evil, and has founded such organizations as the garudaroom, which conducts research into peaceful enjoyment. When Playpoi has enough money, we use it to get Alex to help us with design. He can do the weave and basic turns.
