poi DVDs
Below are your options for learning with playpoi. Note that we also attend other poi related events, offer online poi video lessons, and maintain a list of websites offering instructional resources, and gear.
To stay in the loop (ha ha, get it?), simply subscribe to the blog or the mailing list, or check back regularly.
Poi Lessons Online!
We have so many poi lessons on the site that we've launched a whole POI LESSONS SECTION. We will be offering many more poi lessons in the coming months, so keep visiting, and if you send a video-request we'll make a video-answer (if we can).
Poi Workshops
We teach beginner and experienced poi workhops all over the world. The format of the workshops varies with the circumstances of each location we visit. It can range from a single, one night, "scales of poi" workshop, to weekend long intensives for beginner or experienced poi enthusiasts. Please note that Nick cannot enter the USA until 2010.
Meteor 101
Our first non-poi tutorial! Meteor is like combining poi and staff spinning, and it's fun! This video shows you how to get started. Filmed in Switzerland.
Multiball Contact by Drew Batchelor
Multiball Contact is a way to understand where poi is going. His process of visualizing and creating shapes and movement in space is very much what I've tried to do with poi. I recommend reading it and applying the concepts to poi. It is written by Drew Batchelor of ministryofmanipulation.com, who is a) one of the smartest people I have ever met and b) a pillar in the juggling and spinning communities.
You should go out and buy this book, because you will be smarter and sexier and better at anything you choose to do with your life after reading it. Enough said? I'm glad we had this talk.
Our Philosophy
We think learning poi is like learning music. Once a musician has mastered scales, they can play freely and learn new songs quickly. It is much the same with "the Scales of Poi."
Our goal is to inspire you, help you avoid pitfalls, and to get you on the frontier of poi with us as soon as possible. We are not masters, but we are definitely some of the most dedicated and experienced students you're going to find. It is from this perspective that we share what we know. (The only real poi masters are the Maori, and what they do is very specific to Maori culture.)
We also believe that there are many disciplines that have something to offer poi, so we're contantly looking to learn from any source. We think it's exciting that global poi is such a young art, and we're glad to be part of it's evolution.
