We spend a great deal of time traveling around the world teaching poi workhops. The format of the workshops varies with the circumstances of each location we visit. It can range from a single, one night, "scales of poi" workshop, to a weekend long intensive, to six-week foundation courses.
All workshops focus on exercises and concepts that build motor skills from the ground up. The goal: Complete freedom of movement and expression. Workshops also cover many specific moves, including isolations, hyperloops, hip reels, barrel turns, whirling, compound circles (flowers), etc.
Beginner Lessons focus on building a good foundation for dancing with poi, ideal for those still learning the basic poi movements. Avoid pitfalls, backtracking, and frustration later by developing good habits now.
Intermediate and Advanced Lessons are for those who can move and turn comfortably with all the basic moves, and want to take their practice to the next level. Although many advanced moves will be covered, the focus is to go beyond "moves" and to understand how to develop a deep level of skill with the building blocks of poi movement.
You can also delve into the secrets of poi at one of our occasional weekend or week-long poi retreats. Locations change as Nick travels around the world. In Canada we use Flying Dreams Studio, on Salt Spring Island (between the Southern tip of Vancouver Island and the Mainland, right off the border of British Columbia and Washington State). Other times we use the Yoga Barn in Ubud, Bali. We will announce location details in our newsletters, so make sure you're on the mailing list. Costs vary with the length, format, and location of each retreat, and there are no retreats currently scheduled, so stay in touch and get on the mailing list if you want to receive updates. Our latest Poi Retreat testimonial:
"I didn't know how much I didn't know about poi until my first day with Nick at the Playpoi Studio. I thought I knew, but no. After a week of stretching, coaching, spinning, twisty-turny exercises and getting thwapped by out-of-control poi with a little tai chi thrown in, I came away with an expanded awareness of space around the body and began to see new possibilities in this dance that I'm now exploring back home. Plus I picked up a couple of sweet new moves, but that's beside the point. The retreat was, for me, a richly rewarding experience--if you really want to dive into the flow, a little trip to see Nick & Co. in Vancouver is definitely worthwhile."
