The Poi Studio was a 1,000sf dance studio on Hastings Street in Vancouver, BC. Leasing it may actually be the craziest thing Nick W has ever done, which is impressive, considering how many crazy things he does. It was crazy mostly because he wasn't ready. He didn't even have his own computer at the time, or any students, or anything. But fully equipped dance studios at good costs are hard to come by in Vancouver, and Nick went out on a limb.
Thus began an adventure, and the official creation of playpoi. The studio was home to many retreats, many friendships, some groundbreaking photoshoots, and the filming of The Scales of Poi.
It was also the conduit for many hard lessons, and Nick closed it down when the debts became too great.
Time is bringing perspective to the adventure. The Poi Studio will be remembered for many things: the people who brought their creativity to it's worn floors, the exciting media collaborations that took place, the experiments with video feedback and projection, and the purity of vision that gave it life. You can get a sense of the studio in many of our videos, particularly The Poi Studio, filmed by Camilla Griggers.
Rest well, beautiful studio. We will remember you for a long time.
