Hello, do-it-yourself poi artists!  Here we share some gear designs we've run across.  If you have a design of your own, make a video about it and post it as a video reply to one of ours!

Choosing Your First Poi: Length, Weight, and Grips

People often write us to ask which poi are best. In this video, Nick and G share their thoughts on picking your first pair of poi.

How to Make Double-Staffs

Nick demonstrates how to make double staffs using wooden dowels, bike inner-tubes, and tape in lovely Costa Rica (can you hear the Howler Monkeys?)

How to Make Sock Poi

It's easy to make your own sock poi. All you need is socks, big balloons, and something to fill them with! But remember that you don't need to fill them too much. Just a cup of rice or water is probably enough.

How to Make Meteors

How to make a poi-style meteor with cord, two foamy-rubber balls, and scissors.  We like using Colecord, but you can use any cord that feels good. Some people like climbing rope which you can get at any outdoor store.

Note: traditional meteors use much thicker ropes, but they aren't as fun for tangles and spiral wraps.

Check out the learn section for our instructional videos for meteor, a fun and poi-like toy!

Nick's Personal Fire Poi

What kind of poi does Nick use?  Click through to watch the video and find out!  You can learn where to order many of the parts he mentions in our gear section.

Note:  If you buy parts outside of our recommended shops, please exercise caution and test their strength before using them!

Brandon's Poi

During the Costa Rica retreats we noticed that Brandon had a very unique pair of poi. He was nice enough to demonstrate them for us!

How to Make and Use Colecord Poi

Nick has loved Colecord ever since Cole gave him a pair of poi at the European Juggling Convention in 2006, and the rest of the Playpoi crew agrees!  Colecord is...

  • very comfortable
  • very strong
  • slightly springy
  • has great friction

In the Spring of 2008, we started to correspond with Homeofpoi.com about gear design (among other things) and we sent them samples of colecord and videos about why it's so great. They found the manufacturer in Taiwan and now you can buy Colecord at homeofpoi.com! Yayness!

Show Your Poi

We often get emails asking us about poi, how to make them, how to hold them, etc. Since we had such a great crew of poi spinners in Thailand, we decided to Show our Poi. Bound to give you lots of ideas for practice and fire poi possibilities :)
