Fuel and the Environment

spin-off can for fire poi ballsAll petroleum fuels are toxic to plant and animal life. This includes Kerosene, lamp oil, naphtha, Coleman Camp Fuel, etc. If it's flammable enough to be worth dipping your wicks into, it's toxic. Here are some tips for minimizing fuel spillage:

1) Use a large, sturdy dipping can, such as a restaurant sized coffee can. Always put the lid back on when you're finished dipping. The best containers have lids that snap on securely.  Don't use small, unsteady containers, such as plastic bottles with the tops cut off. They will eventually get knocked over. It's also a good idea to buy a large, sturdy bin for transporting and storing fuel and tools.

2) Place the dipping can on a pan or tarp (not shown: we knew we'd forgotten something).

3) When you dip, take the time to shake off as much fuel as possible back into your dipping can (another reason you need a big can). If you have big wicks, this alone will keep several tablespoons of fuel from spraying onto the ground.

4) Use a shake off container:

For poi: try a large, empty can or bucket with some kind of sieve-like apparatus at the bottom. The vegetable steamers that you put in the bottom of a cooking pots work great, and can usually be purchased at a secondhand store for a couple of dollars. You can also cut the top or bottom off a slightly smaller can, and punch holes in it. After dipping your poi, place them in your shake-off can and swing it in a few big circles, then pour the excess fuel back into your dipping can.

For staff: cut the top off a large water bottle and attach each end of a piece of cord to either side of the top of the bottle. After you dip your staff, place the wet end in the bottle, grip the string along with the staff so the bottle stays on, then give it a couple of good swings. You'll be amazed at just how much fuel you'll save by using these techniques.

Please follow the advice above, or take your own measures to minimize fuel spills. Nature will thank you, and I won't have to kick your ass. If you have any other environmental tips, please send them to us, and I'll add them here. Have fun spinning, and remember: be safe!
