Upcoming Poi Retreats: Costa Rica March 1-7 and Bali April 19-25!

Jeremy at La Escuela Del Sol has invited me to lead poi retreats at their poi/surfing/yoga school in Montezuma, Costa Rica! We're planning one more for March 1-7th! Meanwhile, I'm also organizing a poi retreat in Bali, April 19th - 25th.

Flights are pretty cheap from many parts of the USA (and even Europe) if you look for them via sidestep.com or Vayama.com. You will fly into the Juan Santamaria International Airport, in San Jose (airport code SJO).

DSC01961.JPGThe general format: We'll be setting up music, mirrors, and other special "play stations" with skill-development apparatus to interact with, like Ninja camp, only for poi!

The basic format will be:
  • Optional yoga
  • Breakfast break
  • 2 hour morning poi session
  • Lunch break
  • Fun Time for swimming, surfing, etc!
  • Afternoon play session with further instruction and feedback
  • Dinner break
  • Playtime with LEDs and Fire!

    This will be best for those who can play freely with the basics already. If you don't know all the basics, don't worry, I've just put up our beginner series, so you have time to finish learning!

    The curriculum will include but won't be limited to the following:

    CONCEPTS
  • Advanced control of planes
  • Variations of poi movement: Isolations, extensions, pendulum, inspin, antispin, etc.
  • Freedom of movement and expression
  • Stalls and speeds
  • Variations of flowers
  • Rhythm and Timing
  • Focus points and mode switching
  • Cubes and orbing
  • Linking and tracing
  • Using Focus points for turns, whirling, and beautifying patterns
  • Pirouettes, Whirling, and moving in circles, arcs, and lines on the floor
  • Creating Visual Illusions with Poi (Bullet time stops, relative stalls, contact-style manipulation)
  • Body alignment and conditioning

  • 5-Beat Weaves
  • Behind-the-Back Weaves
  • Under the Legs
  • Inversions, Hyperloops and Orbitals
  • Waist-wraps, crossers, and Meltdowns
  • 4-Beat TTN and Butterfly Weaves
  • 4-Beat Windmill and Matrix
  • Spiral wraps
  • Anti-Spin Weaves
  • Atomic Weaves
  • Hybrids and Triquetras
  • Hyperloops and orbitals (aka superduperuberloops)

    We'll also go on a couple of really fun excursions, such as zip-line canopy tours in the jungle!
